The Exotic Shorthair is an extremely popular, well loved cat. She has a very easy going nature, playful and curious and they need lots of company, if left alone they need a radio or tv left on for company. Here is a cat that is ideal for city dwellers and is happy to be homebound. They are truly a lap cat and will often be found on their humans bed in the morning and always interested in whatever their humans are doing.

Where does the Exotic Shorthair come from?

The Exotic Shorthair originates from the US as a result of the popularity of the Persian breed. It was believed if the Persian was mixed with the American Shorthair it would retain the desired characteristics of the Persian but with the shorter more management coat of the American Shorthair. Though there was massive opposition to these breeds being mixed it became clear that the new breed would not only be accepted it was decided that it would be given its own category for competitions and was given its new name, Exotic Shorthair, the CFA awarded the breed championship status in 1967.


What type of Body does the Exotic Shorthair have i.e. coat, patterns etc?
The Exotic Shorthair body characteristics include:

  • Cobby (a short, compact body with broad shoulders and rump)

  • Short, thick tail

  • Large round eyes set far apart

  • Wide set, round, small ears

  • Flat, extremely broad face

  • Short snub nose with a sweet facial expression

  • Like its Persian cousins the Exotic Shorthair comes in all the same colours and patterns.

History of the Exotic Shorthair ?
The Exotic Shorthair originated in the US in the 1960ís. The result of very selective, careful breeding using the best Persian longhairs and American Shorthairs the aim, to breed a Persian cat in everything but a shorter more manageable coat the American Shorthair retains the same characteristics, colourings and patterns as the Persian.

The Exotic Shorthair will eat normal cat foods whether itís a tined food or biscuit.

Is the Exotic Shorthair an indoor or outdoor cat ?

The Exotic Shorthair is ideally suited to city dwellers and make ideal house cats.

Does the Exotic Shorthair have health problem ?

The Exotic Shorthair, like its Persian cousin, will need particular attention to running eyes because of shortened tear ducts, breathing and sinus troubles due to the snub nose, abridged sinus cavities, dental problems and present in some of the Persian breed lines Polycystic kidney disease which can lead to renal failure.
