Egyptian Mau Temperament
Egyptian Mau cats are:

  • Medium sized, males usually slightly bigger than females ranging from 9lb-13lbs, females from 6lb-8lbs

  • Longer back legs to front legs, five toes on the front paws compared to only 4 on the back paws

  • The head is a wedge shape

  • Large ears

  • Almond shaped eyes

Egyptian Mauís are a very distinctive breed of cat. A medium sized cat their back legs are longer than their front and they have a flap of skin similar to that of the cheetah to enable a longer stride when running. The Egyptian Mau is the fastest domestic cat. They also have five toes on the front paws while only having four toes on the hind paws. With a distinctive ĎMí marking on their foreheads the Egyptian Mau has a characteristic gooseberry green eye colour. Egyptian Mauís are very intelligent and playful cats often trainable they can be taught to retrieve. When out and about they rarely become victims of road traffic accidents because of the speed and highly developed sense of danger and their dislike of loud noises. They are also excellent hunters and have been reported by farmers to have been responsible for saving whole fields of crops by catching all rodents in the vicinity. Egyptian Mauís will become very attached to their humans but if strangers are bought into the home the have a tendency to make themselves taking their time to accept new people. Where does the Egyptian Mau come from?
Ancient Egyptian wall paintings depicting this spotted cat date back 3000 years. Egyptian Mauís arrived in the UK as a recognised breed in late 1998. There are some that believe the Egyptian Mau actually first arrived on our shores many hundreds of years ago brought here by a descendant of the Greek general Galsthelos, a commander of Pharaohís army. Naming Scotland after his ancestorís wife Scota, a descendant of the Egyptian Mau from Egypt also came along and became Scotlandís mascot.

What type of Body does the Egyptian Mau have i.e. coat, patterns etc?
The Egyptian Mauís body characteristics include:

  • The highly distinctive spotted pattern in the fur is also present if the cat was to be shaved bald unlike other breeds of cat whose coats alone carry the spotted pattern

  • The Egyptian Mau comes in three colours, silver, bronze and smoke

  • Their hind legs are decidedly longer than their front legs and they are recorded as the fastest of the domestic cats clocked at running up to 30mph

Food the Egyptian Mau eats ?

The Egyptian Mau will eat normal cat foods whether itís a tined food or biscuit. These cats are apparently very good at self regulating the quantity of food they eat, they are by nature a very slender, sleek looking feline.

Is the Egyptian Mau an indoor or outdoor cat ?

The Egyptian Mau is quite happy to be an indoor cat, in fact due to their exotic appearance they can be a target for cat thieves so it would be wise to confine her to your home or train her to walk on a lead.

Does the Egyptian Mau have health problem ?

The Egyptian Mau is a generally healthy cat but as with all pets she will benefit from annual health checks to make sure kidney and liver function are normal and also for any tooth decay from about 8 years onwards.
